I'm finding the building and running of Overwater Marina to be so interesting that someone suggested I should write a blog and share some of my experiences.
I've lost count of how many people have been into the Marina Reception this week to tell me there's a sheep in with Angus's cattle. Firstly I have to thank them for their concern - we really do appreciate it. There's always a time when something gets out and we don't know about. On this occasion however there can only be one response... "that's not a sheep" - it might look like a sheep, it might sound like a sheep, but it's not really a sheep - THAT is Baa Baa! Those of you who have followed my blog will know that Baa Baa belongs to Isabelle. She had him for her 10th birthday and bottle fed him from a week old. In consequence he has no idea that he looks like a sheep. He has been in the house on numerous ocassions (much to Angus's disgust), has been taught "sheep agility" over the horse jumps, and comes to call. The only snag is now he's bigger he doesn't appreciate his size and has taken to escaping from every field or pen we put him in. He them finds his way to the house to look for "the girl", or alternatively he goes around all the feed sheds stuffing his face with corn. As you can imagine that's probably not good for a sheep (even one that doesn't think he's a sheep) so Angus came up with a solution. Baa Baa has been banished to a faraway field (the only one with stock still out in - for company). So far he has been rescued twice from the brambles and now plaintatively "baas" at anyone passing - so if you do happen to go past - call him over - he likes a bit of a rub under his chin...and tell him not to worry - "the girl" will be down to see him soon.
I'm writing this sitting in the marina office after shivering outside for the annual Overwater Marina Carol Singing session. Sadly the weather is so inclement we didn't make it around the marina - the general concensus was to stay close to the building. The carol singers were in good voice, with a solo of Away in a Manger and Silent Night by Isabelle, and a range of home made percussion instruments to keep us all on track. The singing was impressive, but not quite as impressive as the Overwater version of The Twelve Days of Christmas, performed by Garry and Kevin and written by Roger. Well done boys - I've never heard it done quite like that before!!! And now for the serious bit - I wish you and your family, your friends and anyone who is special to you a truely peaceful and merry Christmas. Try to ignore all the hype, the consumerism and the glitz and take a moment to relax, rest and enjoy. Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year. Janet x
Brrrrr - what a change in the weather to last month. Winter really does feel like it's arrived at last. We're selling coal and logs like they're going out of fashion and the only thing that's worrying me is will there be any left to keep the home fire burning! Our house is quite old and very, very cold - in fact last year I actually threatened to leave home and move into the first available boat - I think it was at the point where I seriously contemplated wearing a wooly hat in bed to prevent hypothermia! This year seems positively tropical by comparison (at the moment)! The children broke up from school on Wednesday and are currently winding themselves up nicely for Christmas. Anna has a thriving handmade Christmas card business up and running and Isabelle is working on her second batch of mince pies. All of which has been completely surpassed by the newest member of the family - "Twinkle", a 7 week old black kitten which somehow we got talked into yesterday....but that's another story...
It's a bit of a struggle to write anything today so I'll have to be brief. We have had a fantastic week - it started off with confirmation that we have been awarded 5 out of 5 gold anchors in the British Marine Federation/Yacht Harbour Association Gold Anchor Scheme. I feel a bit like a proud mum over it all because it makes us the first inland waterways marina on BW waters to receive the award. On Tuesday night we had a charity Pampered Chef Cookery party - Can't Cook, Won't Cook - my two (un)willing volunteers were Garry and Colin (thanks boys!!) and they were brilliant! Garry - I've never seen chopping like that before!! Rookery Hall Hotel and Spa, the Overwater Coffee Lounge, the Audlem Lass team, and one of our moorers, Jenny, all donated prizes for our raffle and we raised around £250 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association - thank you so much!! And finally the week finished off with us trooping off to Crewe Hall for the annual South Cheshire Business Awards - and WE WON!!!!!!!!!!!!! We were awarded "Best Start-Up Business of the Year". Obviously such a proud moment couldn't pass without the odd glass of wine....which really might explain why it's such a struggle to write anything today...just wondering if I can get away with having a bit a lie down under my desk........
