Angus and I have been away last week on a road trip – well, to be precise a summer networking event organised by The Yacht Harbour Association, which in turn is the body who represents marinas within the British Marine Federation. We started off in London at Penton Hook Marina, then travelled by coach (the same one which transports Watford Football Club!!) through the Channel Tunnel (a first for me) to France, and had snails for lunch (another first!) at Gravelines Marina, then on to Belgium for some beer (...Ok, so not quite the first time I've drunk copious amounts of beer, but certainly it was the first time I've drunk it in Belgium!) From there we travelled to Holland and visited a number of marinas and an amazing company who build boat lifts, hoists and fairground rides (I kid you not!) And everywhere we went we were offered beer and food, more beer and food and well, even more beer and food! Every marina was different and although they were mainly coastal or sailing boats, it was lovely to see lots of different aspects we can think about incorporating back here. It was also comforting to see that all the marinas, be they inland or coastal often shared similar issues. The trip lasted 3 days and we got back last Friday, so I've now spent the weekend having withdrawal symptoms from beer, coffee and cake (something else we kept being offered) and pondering whether I can justify another "factfinding trip" to see the rest of Europe....
