How not to drive a boat

Last week I had a brilliant day out – at last I managed to find the time to go out and do my Inland Waterways Helmsman's Certificate with Linda from Cheshire Cat Training which is based at the Marina. Typically it just so happened to be one of the windiest days of the week but at least the rain kept off. The day started off promisingly – a mug of hot tea and biscuits while we had the safety talk. It wasn't all that confidence building to hear about all the nasty ways you can seriously injure yourself whilst floating along the canal, but joking aside it really made me think about how foolish we can all sometimes be when it comes to our own safety. We had a great time – Colin and Angus were there too and we all spent the day arguing about whose turn it was next....until we got to the tricky bits (narrow bridges, winding holes, near collision narrows) when all of a sudden they both seemed really keen to hand me the tiller.....
